How can I make my bedroom a romantic retreat with NO money??

Question:Right now, we do not have money for any luxuries, but since I'm out of work, I have the time. My bedroom is a clutter magnet and I am working on decluttering my bedroom. But, even if I clear out all non-essentials to the room, it does not have a welcoming feel to it.
Also, my husband is deathly allergic to perfumes and fragrances, so fragrant candles or perfumes and even certain cleaners are OUT.

Do you have any ideas on how to make a bedroom romantic without spending ANY money?

Answers:
My favorite place for free things is always freecycle. It's a community of people who give and receive things from others, think free recycling. There is usually a freecycle group in most areas with medium sized towns, and it's definitely worth taking a look.

The only other things that I can think of involve spending money, not much of it but still - money. Things like yard sales, goodwill, thrift stores, etc.

Good Luck.

The power of cheese
You can put flowers by your bed, the ones you get from the garden, so thats free.
well i was gonna reccomend candles, but since your husband doesnt like them, then the only thing i can thing of is to hang up pictures of you and your husband. like pictures of when you two first started dating and how you two fell in live over the years. maybe looking back on all the long years you and him have spent together, will spark a flame under the sheets. goodluck
Have any old sheets of a solid colour? You could design a canopy to cover your bed. Or play with the lighting. Take a look at magizines and see what you like or what you find as romantic. Try to think of ways you can get the look you want with things around your house. You'd be amazed with what you can come up with!
Well, just clean anything out that is an eye sore. Some non-scented candles are always nice. If you have a pretty sheet you can use it as a sash and use staples or brads and put it on the wall above the bed. Keep your bed made up. Maybe a lamp if you have one just a small one to put some dim lighting in there. Pillows always say romance to me for some reason. LOL I have lots of decorative throw pillows on my bed. If you have an old sheet with some stains or something, cut it up and throw out the stained up areas and use it to make some pretty throw pillows and if you do have a few bucks, go to wal-mart and buy some decorative tassels to put on them.
It costs you nothing to change your behavior in the bedroom. Just be more attentive, loving, and focused on him when you are in the bedroom. That is a palace right there, to be treated like you are everything in the world to somebody. It will make your bedroom a romantic retreat. Just do your best to keep it clean. You don't need any junk to prevaricate a situation of romance that is unreal and only accompanies luxury. It's about love, and all you need for love is the two of you.
Get rid of your old man and buy some candles.
Given your guidelines, the best things you can do are make it very clean and very "presentable." I love when the bedroom is spotless and all of the pillows are in their place, the TV and Radio are off and the lights are at a comfortable(low) brightness level.

Then the only thing to add is you dressed in a way that is warm, comfortable and inviting!
WHEN I WAS FIRST MARRIED I USED SHEETS AND IF YOU HAVE A SEWING MACHINE YOU ARE IN LUCK.

I MADE A TABLE COVER AND FOR AN OLD TABLE AND CURTAINS OUT OF OLD SHEETS.

SOME OF THE SHEETS WERE SOLID WITH A PRINT ONLY ON THE TOP OF THE SHEET YOU FOLD DOWN WHEN YOU MAKE THE BED.

I CUT THE TRIM OFF AND USED IT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TOPPERS FOR MY CURTIANS.

I USED OTHER SHEETS AND MADE A COMFORTER.

IF YOU HAVE ANY EXTRA BUTTONS I MADE A SLIP COVER FOR OLD PILOWS AND PLACED A BUTTON AND RIBBON ON PILLOWS TO USE AS AN ACCENT ON MY BED. OR SET ON A CHAIR.
Once you get your room de-cluttered, use a vinegar and water solution (1 cup white vinegar to a gallon of water) to clean the windows, wipe down the furniture, etc. Wash the curtains and open the windows to allow the fresh air in.

If your husband is not allergic to honey, he most likely won't be allergic to pure beeswax candles. They have a lovely, sweet honey scent and burn far longer than paraffin candles.

Gather some fresh flowers from either your garden or the roadside and display them in a vase on your dresser, if his allergies will allow that. White and yellow ox-eye daisies, black-eyed susans, and purple loosestrife are currently in bloom on the roadsides.

You could also have small dishes of candies or his favorite munchies, and another basket with romance-related items like massage oil, flavored gels, etc., which you may already have... just put them out where they're at hand when you want them.

Another idea, if you have space in your room, is to have a small sitting/reading area with a couple comfy chairs and a small coffee table. Just a retreat to sit and read and be quiet together.
Dim lighting and soft music.
Try re-arranging your furniture, on a piece of paper first, then see which appeals to you visually. Print-off some black and white photos from the internet, whatever suits you both, whether it be flowers, the ocean, etc. Unscented candles can be used, making your own with parafin wax and some square shapes to pour the wax into, is there a theme you like? The beach, get some sand and seashells, place them in an old thick photoframe. Get some throw pillows, you can make those out of bedsheets and stuff them with "recycled" pillows that you no longer use. A green plant will add life to your room as well, and won't bother your husband's allergies either. Keeping only things that you use in baskets will de-clutter your dresser top, books and magazines you like to read can add "relaxation" to any room and make it inviting. There are no rules to matching anything anymore, two different lamps, two different night tables etc. will add interest and make it more inviting. Good luck!
Removing clutter as you are now doing is a wonderful start.
The only way I can think of making your bedroom romantic without spending ANY money is to "shop" around your own home and see what you can find. Do you have plants in the room, or do you have a garden so you can bring in fresh flowers? Even a blossom or two in a bud vase would be pretty.

Do you have a pretty piece of fabric, or a scarf you could drape over the back of a chair, a nightstand, etc? A table runner you aren't using could be used on a dresser, or angled across a bench or trunk, etc.

Sometimes stores that sell wallpaper will give away their old books. These are a great source for zero dollar decorating. Find some pretty paper that you like, and cover a book or two. I have two, in shades of pale sage green and moss green, on my chest of drawers. There's a little lamp sitting on top of the books.

You can also use the wallpaper pages as mats for photos or pictures.

Beautiful seashells in a dish look feminine and fresh.

You said your husband is allergic to fragrances. I think you can buy unscented candles, and you might check for those. There's nothing like the soft glow of candlelight to make a room romantic.

If you have just a little money, check out some garage sales and thrift stores. Be on the lookout for throw pillows, a new bedspread or comforters, sheers for your window treatments (if you have shades or blinds) etc. Look for things you could paint or touch up a little. For instance, a wooden tray could be spray painted a color to match your decor. On it place a little vignette: two wine glasses and a bunch of artificial grapes, a pretty tea pot and cups along with a book or two and a bud vase of silk roses, etc. Place the tray at the end of your bed, or on a dresser or nighstand.

Mirrors are also romantic and reflect light and candlelight. Look for some at thrift stores, or refinish frames for what you may already own.

If you can paint the room, that may give you just the look you want.

I'm out of ideas! The internet has thousands of sources for no-cost or low-cost decorating. Since you have some time on your hands, you might do some research. You'll be glad you did. Good luck.
Dress a little provacative and with soft music on, you on one side of the room and him on the other, clean it towards each other. Like in the movie Ghost, working together on
the room with a little teasing will lead to an ultimate and very
intimate goal. Both problems taken care of and a beautiful
memory also. Plus this works in all rooms and the car too.
And its all totally free !
Some silk floral arrangements and if you have a small stereo place it in the room and play ocean music or any kind of relaxation music. Second hand stores and yard sales ...check them out. Maybe a small water fountain you could find?
