How much does a decent cedar fence cost?
Question:I need a new fence for privacy, protection for my baby from dogs, and I have yucky neighbors.
I have an old chain link fence in my small backyard. I have about 70' of fencing. One side is 4', other side 3'. I'd want a cedar 6' fence installed that is good quality, but not top of the line.
I'd like to know:
1) How much would it cost to have someone to remove the 4' chain link fence on one side (35')?
2) How much would it cost (labor + materials) to have someone install a 6' good cedar fence with posts and everything and only 1 gate?
3) How much would it cost to have said fence/gate stained by someone?
4) The nasty dogs urinate through our fence. Would stained cedar hold up to the urine? How often do you need to stain/seal the fence?
5) The neighbors also don't rake leaves. Would having this big cedar fence prevent leaves from blowing into my yard from under the fence or not?

We are a Central Florida Fence Company serving Orlando and it's surrounding communities and here is how we would price the job you are referencing. Keep in mind that prices differ all across the country depending on availability of materials.

1. Removal & disposal of 35' of chain link fencing: $150
2. 70' of 6ft wood cedar fence installed would run you about $2000 with one walk gate.
3. Same fence would be about $500 to treat/stain.
4. You need to treat the fence at least once per year.
5. Having the fence in place should prevent leaves from blowing into your yard from under the fence. Chicago is the windy city so I would go with a "shadowbox" style fence. This fence looks the same from both sides and still provides privacy. The design allows wind to easily pass through.
you are asking questions that really can not be answered unless ( for at least some of this) CAN BE SEEN AND MEASURED. You also need to know about the local cost of supplies in your area. contractor costs will be all over the map. be careful. narrow your questions down to more manageable bites and you will get more useable info. Try again, good luck!
It all depends on your area. In the SW US, I just paid for a fence of western red cedar. The best estimates I obtained for western red cedar (top of the line) were about $17/ft installed with no extra charge for removal. That's for a 6" plain fence with surrounded steel posts. The staining would help with the dog urine (especially if your neighbor allowed that side to be stained). As far as staining, it wouldn't have to be done immediately and you could shop around for that. Meanwhile spray your fenceline to discourage dogs "activities."
