Ah, now your'e talking! to start you need a clean, stripped and primed surface. The easest way to get the drywall mud up there is to borrow, or rent an air compessor, 50 ft. hose, a mud hopper with turn off valve attached, cover all walls and floors with taped down plastic to keep the mess to a min. depending on how much area you will be spraying mud, now this is the mud that you will modify by a varity of means depending on the effect. even mistakes can look pretty good if you can be consistent. go to a class at home depot or shoot some mud on a large peice of cardboard and experiment with different tools. ther are a lot of tools and choices. good luck and good hunting!
Flowers in the ceiling could be made with a stencil and some type of texturing paint. I have swirls in my ceiling made with sand paint and a trowel.
"stomped" texture is done with joint compound and a "stomp" brush. It is easier if you loosen the "mud" a little bit. To do this get a 1/2" drill and a paddle. Mix the mud until it is smooth. It takes alot of mud for stomping so you may as well mix an entir 5 gallon bucket. The stomp brush looks like a broom but the bristles are shorter and it shaped like a circle. Attach the brush to an extension pole to save yourself some trips up the ladder. Dip the brush into the mud, and then "stomp" it against the ceiling. As you pull it away, slightly twist the brush. Let the mud dry for at least a day and then put a PVA primer over it before you paint it.
Textured ceilings can be done with a paint roller specially designed for this purpuse. You apply and design with it. I use drywall compound, adding water and mixing with a heavy duty drill until its quite manageable. Drywall compound works well it is easy to paint not like stucco mixes. As for designs you can use a sponge my favorite is a cheap broom just unscrew the handle. Texturing isn't easy and you can't stop or you will see the overlaps. It isn't a DIY project if you want try a small ceiling first.
