How can I divide a room without using Shoji or similar screens?
Question:My new place has one large room that will act as dining room and living room. I would like the two spaces to feel separate but I don't want to use screens. Bookshelves are difficult because the backing would be visible from one side and that's ugly. Any innovative ideas?
Answers:
Use bookshelves that are finished on both sides. See link below. Or, just use a sofa table with a tall vase full of tall flowers or twigs. If these are not your style, maybe hanging sheers or beads from the ceiling?
You can often divide a room by the use of area rugs. Use the rug to separate one area from the other. You could get shelving units that are open on the back, which would still separate the areas but leave an open feel to the room, as well.
How about putting a sofa table behind a couch with a lamp and some photos, and face the dining table parallel to the back of the couch, so you see the sofa table?
It will create partition but will be open so it won't look crowded either.
Yes, I just did this...there are places that sell decorative glass that is etched so you really can't see directly through it but you will get all of the light and it still feels divided but not closed off. The company I used is called Meltdown Glass and here is their info: www.meltdownglass.com, 1-800-845-6221. Hope this helps :)
