Picking paint colors?

Question:i am buying my first home and i am trying to choose color scheme. I like gold type colors and i also like grey for maybe the bedroom, and many others, I am having trouble trying to pull it all together, any helpful hints?

Answers:
It's your house. Have fun and don't worry about "pulling it all together". I think that is a very overused catchphrase that takes much of the pleasure out of decorating. After struggling a bit with trying to coordinate paint colors for a rather large home, I finally threw my hands up and decided to pick colors based on the personality of who would use the room most. Our colors include crimson, two shades of green, old gold, brown, grey, two shades of blue, grape, light tan, yellow and pumpkin orange. The only color consistent from one area to the next is a bright clean white for the wood trim. The difference from room to room ends up being the "scheme". The gold in the foyer and grey in my husband's office transition very well, by the way.

I would visit the homes of family and friends. When you see a color that you like ask them what it is and where they found it.
you can also see different color ideas by going into furniture stores. They often set up each room with color schemes and things that match.
You Mentioned Grey. Though it can be ok it is kind of a dull color, and may look more like a funeral parlor color than a color that is inviting and bright. Bright colors Antique White, pastels and floral Colors (not Prints) are apealing. Also you can add stencling to make a statement and bring warmth to a room. There is also the use of chair rails and borders as well.
have fun with it and enjoy enhancing your new home. Dare to be different. It will show the real You.
Since you like gold, I would use it more of an accent color. Colors that go well with gold are orange, green, and brown, but a deep red or purple also go well. The red and purple show wealth, riches, and lavish when used with gold. So if you paint your walls a deep red and use say picture frames in a gold color, you're giving off a sophisticated type of decorating.
For the bedroom and using grey, it can create an environment that will make your room feel somewhat like a cave, so make sure you pick the right shade of grey and have plenty of lighting. If you are trying to keep a theme throughout the house as in your rooms go well together. Then you can do a cranberry, cocoa, and grey for the bedroom. This way you are keeping the color richness in your rooms. With the grey color did you want a smokey grey or more of a bluish grey...just some things to think about.
The third source I listed is particularly helpful with different colors, what they mean, and other colors that they go with.
I've listed many sites that talk about colors, color schemes, etc. hope they are helpful
Go to www.sherwinwilliams.com and you can paint a room (walls and trim) with different colors to see how well it looks together.
Pick 3 colors that coordinate. Follow the 60%, 30% 10% guideline. . .Say the livingroom color A is 60%, color B is 30% (trim, maybe) and color C is 10% (accessories.) In the next room, you have the same colors, but the percentages are switched. It keeps a flow going, but changes up the look. Also, it doesn't have to be that way through the whole house. You can do colors a,b, and c in the livingroom/dining room and kitchen, then do colors d,e, and f in the hall, bedroom, and bathroom. Have fun!!
