What is best to use for a baby's room on the windows - blinds, shades or what?
Question:I have valances for the top of the window but what is best to use for a baby's nursery to cover the windows? Mini blinds, wood blinds, shades, etc. HELP!

Well,those pull down shades are very nice and safe,too! If you use anything with cords,either cut them short or tie them up very high so baby can't get ahold of them.Also,don't position the crib or anything they can climb on near the windows! :) Congrats!
You know what I did? Dark blue curtains (I obviously have a boy), because as they get older, it's harder for you to get them to nap during the day, or go to bed when it's light out earlier during the summer months. I'd say stay away from blinds because they have the strangulation hazard pull string, but maybe the shades that can be pulled down? Those get the room pretty dark. Congrats on the baby :)
Mini blinds and wood blinds have slats and cords, so I'd go with a shade, preferably a pretty paper without a pull cord. They're cheap enough that if little hands tear it down, it's easy to replace. (And it won't need the cleaning that blinds will.)
I have blinds on my son's window because that's what the house came with, but it did become a problem when the first clock change rolled around and it got so light in his room SOOOOOO early! He was getting up at 5:00 AM! So I hung blue curtains over the blinds for additional light blocking. They are tab top, so I can easily slide them open during the day. Shades that you pull down would be nice, but they aren't as pretty. Just be sure to keep all cords out of reach!
I don't recommend blinds because they can present choking hazards to extremely little ones. Plantation shutters seem like a good option, but if you're like me you'll find that dreary.
The most viable option is wood blinds which contain no cord, but they can be very expensive. For me a pair of filmy curtains and a single shade without any dangling cords would be preferrable.
I tend to like light,airy open rooms, which is why I'd vie for this option. Safety above all else is the most signifcant challenge coupled with your preference for heating/cooling the room and the filtering or blocking of light as you prefer.
