What exactly are footings??
Question:I wanted to add a third car car to my existing 2car attatched garage and the builder said the concrete was going to be expensive cause they have to put it "footings" to attach to the existing garage. What is so expensive and labor intensive?? Now I goatta think about a free standing separate garage.

The footings are what supports the weight of the structure. You cannot build on a 4" or 6" slab of concrete. The weight of the structure could not be supported. The perimeter walls have to be supported by "footers". This can be a monolithic pour in which the slab and the footing are in one pour and harden or cure together. A single story structure requires less of a footer than say a three story building obviously because or the weight that the footer has to uphold.
footing are the stumps that hold everything up, this must mean your house isnt on a concrete slab and has stumps. the work is alot of digging and laying timber foundations.where as if conrete its a case of levelling and pour. considering you cant drive 3 cars at once you can always keep 1 you dont use much in the garage and erect a carport in front of the garage.much cheaper.
Footings are the poured concrete pads that the structure rests on. What I don`t get is, if you`re pouring concrete for the floor, you don`t need footings. The walls rest on the perimeter of the poured floor. If you`re not pouring a floor, & will just park on dirt or gravel, then you need footings, but it will be much less expensive. Your best bet would be to check with several other builders & cross referance their bids, then check with the better business bureau. Get referances.
