Putting an area rug on top of normal rug?
Question:What do u think of the idea? stupid? My apt. is beige carpeted but I like the idea of an area rug for the living room. Is that not a good look? Will it make my living room seem smaller(its already small)?

I am renting and HATE the carpet in the living room. I can't change the carpet so I put an area rug down instead. I also thought that it would look funny but I ended up loving it! You could always purchase one and then return it if you don't like it. It did not change the look of the size of the room at all. My Grandmother purchased 7 rugs at one time and tried them all out. She kept the one she liked the best and returned the rest!
An area rug is an excellent choice over carpeting to give focus to a room's seating and dining areas. I have used Orientals and antique hooked rugs in many homes and love the look.
It won't make the living room look too small, just stay with a smaller size to not overwhelm the room.
It will look fine and will bring some color and interest to the room and it will also help to define the space well. Just make sure it is not exactly the same color and maybe even try a different texture or process type then your existing carpet.
Putting an area rug over carpeting is a great idea. It defines a space, brings color and texture and if it's an oriental rug it hides dirt. If you tire of the colors in the area rug you can always buy another and use the old one in another room. They are great for bringing a new look to a bland or boring room plus they are a focal point.
