Try painting the walls a light to mid grey color. Paint one wall as an accent wall (have your teen choose this color--red, green, blue, etc..just let them go for it!).
On one wall, you can use magnetic paint. This will go UNDER the final color you choose to paint the walls. This way, they can use that wall as a place to post up their notes, pics, etc without ruining the walls with tape or holes.
If your teen wants posters on the wall but no extra money for framing them, try taking some left over paint (of a darker or lighter color than the wall) and paint an outline of the poster. So, if the poster is say 16x20, paint the size of 20x24 and then place the poster in the middle. It will accent the poster and make it look a bit more clean than just a poster plopped up on the wall.
As far as decor, I'd suggest shelves. They don't have to be anything costly. They can just be pre-made shelves or a length of wood with brackets. Kids usually come with a lot of knick-knacks and this is a great way to get them out of the way and help with clutter.
Something I think is pretty cool for a males room is using an old tool chest as a nightstand or for school supplies. Paint (or re-paint it ) red.stands out and has great compartments for supplies, CD's, "junk".
If your son is into sports, another great thing to do is use some gear for the walls. Skateboarder? Use old skateboards as shelves. Or a surf board as a huge shelf or hanging in a corner. Old hockey sticks with coat hooks work great for jackets and hats.
It really all gets down to the personality of your teen. What their likes and dislikes are. Then, its just using the imagination!
Good luck!
