Can i do some type of painting or processes over my counter tops they are butcher block looking?
Question:
Answers:
If they are HPL, high pressure laminate, i.e. Formica, paint will not stick and if it did it would not be tough enough for kitchen counter tops. Going over HPL with new HPL works guite well though.
i had a friend of mine re-do my countertops to look like 'granite'. the countertops were just ordinary formica . first she lightly sanded and then she took 3 diff colors paint (water based) black, grey, white and sponged/dabbed the paint in layers from dark to light. letting each coat dry completely. then we applied at least 6 coats of polyurethane to seal and protect from chipping, lightly sanding between coats. it was done over 5 years ago and it still looks GREAT. no nicks, no scratches, no gouges. totally changes the entire look of the kitchen. good luck!
note: the first coat (black) was used to pretty much cover the entire surface. NOT completely but almost thoroughly. sponge painting is not the same as using a brush. and it adds many layers to a surface by dabbing and not brushing.
Sure is, I redid my formica counter tops several years ago and the still look pretty good.
1. Clean the surface really well with a non oily cleaner like TSP
2. lightly sand surface
3. paint with Kilz or similar product-youi have to get the one
that is FOR shiny surfaces.
4. do whatever treatment you want-I sponged mine with cream and blue-sponging is very forgiving if you get a chipped spot and need to touch it up
5. apply a minimum of 4 coats of polyurethane
