Actually, I believe you mean "popcorn" or some other texture? Don't start swinging sledgehammers. It usually can be scraped off with a large putty knife. Take care not to gouge the drywall underneath, you'll probably end up doing a bit of patching anyways. I don't know how old your home is, but be warned that "popcorn" is often used as a cover up for water damage and cracks. You might find yourself doing a lot more work after removing it. Good luck!
Sorry to correct you, Its called Lathe & Plaster. the best way to remove it? A Hammer, A big hammer. First make some ice tea. A gallon, maybe two. Then start swinging, Try not to hit your self. ( I tend to do this a lot.) Drink lots of Iced Tea. Its going to be messy, so try not to piss off your other half. Good Luck. Better find out how old it is 1st, the old acoustic ceilings (as it called) is filled with asbestos and requires proper removal. It's probably not stucco. New or old, it's a blown on coating kinda like a highly textured finish. No matter how you look at it it's going to be a lot of work to scrape it off and re-do it.
I'm thinking you're talking about what we call up here a Stippled ceiling. That's also the popcorn style. If it has not been painted you're in luck. Use a spray bottle and spray hot water on it in sections and scrape/wipe it off. Cold water will also work but hot works better. Make sure you have poly on your florrs everywhere as it will get messy. If it has been painted, God help you!! You're in for a very tough job!! It's easier to just drywall over it, tape and mud and paint over it. Even a room the size of a bathroom is a HUGE pain in the you know what if it has been painted.
