hi i would not recommend that you artex your ceiling
why don't you try wall paper, such as a super fresco you can get all the patterns the same as artex but without the mess and also its easy'er to remove
if you can paper walls OK then you should be able to paper a ceiling OK as papering a ceiling is just as easy just use a strong ready mixed paste and you will be fine

I could give you instructions but in this case the practical far outweighs the theory. I tried it on my bathroom ceiling and ended with up a lumpy ceiling and a spikey hairdo. my advice would be to call in a professional. of all ceiling finishes, artexing is probably the cheapest and trust me you will save yourself grief.
