Answers:
movers typically charge by the hour with a 4 hour minimum. Rates are base on if the move is in state or out of state, how many men will be needed, and if there are stairs (especially if you live in an apartment). Movers typically charge between $75-$90 dollars an hour. Hope this helps.

Before the movers show up, all of this should have been discussed and decided. A mover will always ask what you need moved so they will know what size truck to bring, and they will tell you the price in advance. Now, if you don't know, don't let the movers load up even one piece of furniture until you have a firm quote.
When my parents moved, the estimate was by what the mover thought the load would weigh. I think the original estimate was for around $1500 to move the contents of a six room house about 45 miles. Knowing that they would be weighing the load and basing the final price on that, we moved a lot of stuff like loaded dresser drawers, clothes, books and other heavy item by ourselves. The final cost came in at the minimum which was $750. Find out how they're going to charge before you let them load - you might find it cheaper to get some friends and a rented truck.
I've moved several times, anywhere from 2 blocks up to 1000 miles. For a short move such as yours, you'll find it a lot cheaper to rent a Ryder or U-Haul truck and move yourself. You can usually get a truck for $50/day or less, plus you can also get an appliance cart through them for a minimal fee, and the cart can be used to move everything from appliances to any of your heavier items. Or if you have a friend with a horse trailer, they work excellent for moving. Pack your glass tables using your blankets/comforters for packing cushion, and you can use towels for cushion for glassware as well. Even if you get stuck buying food and beverages for those who help you, you'll still be spending less than using professional movers. Good luck at your new home!
