How can i cover wall tiles to enable me create a smooth surface to paint on without plastering?

Question:I am gutting a bathroom which has been tiled from top to bottom. I want to tile up to a point and then have smooth painted walls up to the ceiling. I want the solution to be as quick and as cheap as possible and to avoid plastering or removing the tiles.

Answers:
Harboard cut to size and fixed in place with liquid nails, finish with an anti condensation paint (bathroom paint).

AmyBaby, ain't no way. And, plastering over tile ain't gonna work either. If you want a smooth wall to paint on, you're going to have to remove the tiles then deal with the tile mastic or thin-set beneath them. Likely this will entail replacing the backer-board with 1/2" sheetrock or covering the existing board with 1/4" sheet rock. The latter could create a lumpy problem at the tile/wall intersection.

Good luck.
