How NOT to get paint on cottage cheese ceiling?
Question:My husband and I are painting our living room walls. The vaulted ceilings are covered in that acoustic cottage cheese/popcorn spray texture. How do we paint the walls without getting paint on the cottage cheese? If you try to put blue painters tape on the ceiling, won't it just pull off the texture?
Answers:
In conjuction with the painters edge someone else answered earlier, they sell a flat paint thingie(sorry not sure the proper name) but it is about 3x4 in size and flat and has a little pad that slides in the handle and has 2 little plastic roller wheels that roll along the edge of the wall to help you get a straight line, keep the wheels clean and be careful when soaking up he paint make sure to only get paint on the pad. It may knock off a little of the popcorn stuff but shouldnt be noticeable. I insist on using these. Zinsser is a brnad name of one I have used recently, they do have a website. Zinsser.com
intresting cieling maybe tou can eat it thanx for the 2 points
I just thought of this idea right now.. here it goes:
have a plastic board or cardboard and hold it slanted while you are painting the top edges with a brush- a roller wouldn't do it. The board will act as a boundary to the ceiling. get it?It will take a long time until you finish,. but you can do it!
Most hardware and paint supply stores sell what is called a "painter's edge" which is basically a long flat piece of steel or plastic with a handle attached to it. Hold the tool along the seam where your walls and ceiling meet, and paint along the tool edge. Make sure to clean this tool often because excess paint will accumulate on the edge and transfer to areas you don't want painted.
painter's blue tape is a low adhesion tape nothing like standard duct or masking. I use it on archetectual oil base as well as my movie room which is in the spray texture. Important to remeber is to not leave the tape on any longer then necessary. but test a small area in a corner first to be sure of the texture strength. Easiest solution i use is to hold a piece of cardboard like craft paper at a 45 degree angle into the corner and brush along it thus protecting the ceiling without taping.
hope this helps
Yep, the tape will pull off just enough of the texture for it to look bad. Try the flat trim pads with tiny wheels which will keep the line of paint about 1/4 in from the ceiling. Just be careful when you load the thing. I used these and it works so well that I didn't even have to tape anything! Cutting in took less time than painting the 19x14 room.
paint pad and or the painters edge are the best options. I would also think very stongly about getting that popcorn ceiling removed. They are ugly (sorry), the collect dust, and they sometimes contain asbestos. I have just bought a house and painted the entire interior myself (mostly) and I have textured ceiling which are almost as bad as the popcorn. In two rooms I used the paint pad and in the others I just cut in with a brush. The pad is much faster but can sometime lay the paint on pretty thick. Just take your time and it will come out fine.
