Which should I use oil or water based primer for old dark stained cabinets?

Question:I want to paint the kitchen cabinets. I can sand most of the old varnish off.ther are several layers that looks like varnish on them and the color is dark and ugly.
I want the paint to be durable.
So which is better oil based primer or water based primer. And which paint is best for cabinets?
I would really appreciate some help with this. I don't have the money for new cabinets.
thanks much!

I have painted for a living for over 10 years. Please trust me you do not want to use a latex primer. I am sure everyone means well but an oil based primer will work the best and it won't come off. There is a product called B.I.N. (they make latex and oil based) make sure you get the oil based kind. This primer will adhere to ANYTHING (even a mirror) and it won't come off. If you use a latex based primer after it dries you will be able to take your fingernail and just scrape it right off so you don't want that. Use the B.I.N. you don't even have to sand first just paint it on. You can use latex paint over the oil based B.I.N. (which I would.) If you want to have a very professional look when it's finished take the extra time to take the doors off first AND take the hinges off before you paint (make sure you paint anything that will show when the doors are open too.) Also, There is paint that is made especially for painting cabinets (it's harder than regular paint so it dosen't chip as easily) I don't remember the name of it but any paint store will be able to help you with that. It does cost a little more but 1 gallon goes a long way. I got mine at Sherwin Williams. Also, If you want a really smooth finish use one of those 3 or 4 inch wide rollers. (not foam though that will leave bubbles.) You should be able to do this all for under 100.00 which is way cheaper than new cabinets. I think painted cabinets are beautiful if painted properly. Good luck with this project and be patient so you get a good job. It will be worth it. 1 more thing, The oil based B.I.N. does have a strong odor so make sure you use lots of ventilation when using it and I would also put that on with one of those small rollers and than just throw it away when finished priming they are just too hard to clean out and they are pretty cheap anyway like $3.00.

water based is best, its easier to handle, and easier to use.the fact the cabinets have varnish on them doesn't really matter you will just have to use about 3 coats if 2 doesnt do the trick
I would buy some Kilz and put a couple of coats of Kilz on the cabinet doors. The Kilz acts as a primer. I believe they have oil based Kilz as well.
