What is the most environmentally safe countertop surface material avaialable?

Question:Planning to re-do the kitchen, would love to get a 'green' material, but I don't want to break the bank.

Answers:
Google:
LEED countertops

Most of what's really environmentally "correct" is made up of recycled materials like glass and concrete that is manufactured CLOSE to you (within 50 miles).

I would take a lot of claims with a grain of salt and be prepared to replace your new countertops if they don't perform as you might like. A lot of this stuff has not been around long enough to have any track record.

Caveat #1:
Anything with a concrete base will have to be sealed periodically.
Caveat #2:
Aggregate countertops are only as strong as the binding material. If it fails, they crumble.
