What is the best paint finish for a kitchen?

Question:I have been told not to go with a flat paint finish because the paint comes right off if you have to wipe the walls. So should I go with a semi-gloss or satin? Eggshell? Help!

Answers:
Semi gloss, or eggshell, it depends on how much sunlight it gets, but I think you should use Semi-gloss in the ceiling and eggshell in the walls, if it's the same color then use semi gloss on the whole project

Eggshell. Thats what I have put in hundreds of condo's that I have built. Works good.
WHITE and BLACK or Fully TAN!
semi gloss, it wipes of easily without being too shiny, and flat paint absorbs grease spots... bad
TRUE! it will wipe right off. I would use a laytex it seems to clean up really well!!
Hi, Go with a gloss type. It wears well when washed. The flat paint doesn't go so well. Good luck!
That is true about a flat or matte finish. The house I just bought has a flat finish and washing the cabinets takes off the paint as well as the grime!
I would do a semi or high gloss depending on how much shine you want. I don't like a lot of shine so I always go with a semi.
The very best would be gloss enamel. But this is the hardest to apply, most expensive and hardest to clean-up.

Next best is latex paints in either semi-gloss or gloss. Latex cleans up with water while enamel cleans up with thinner.
I love eggshell myself. Has just enough gloss to clean very well, not so much that it looks glossy. Satin would be a second choice, semi-gloss is just too much.
The BEST is always a high gloss. (best if sprayed on). The second best is a semi-gloss. After that Eggshell, Satin, & Flat. Never apply any gloss over existing gloss without prep & a good primer. Flat is not a primer, as many people seem to think it is. What you have on the walls NOW should determine how many extra steps you will need to take in order to change the surface of your kitchen walls.
Semi gloss is washable , Eggshell, is washable with a sligh texture,
I painted my kitchen six years ago with semi-gloss on the walls. It has held up very well, looks nice, easy to clean.
I put enamel on the cabinetry. It looks great and is super easy to clean. It took some time and patience to apply but has definitely been worth it.
Semi or gloss should be used when painting kitckens that way you can scrub the walls it needed to get off grease ect, the bet paint is Benjamin Moore, can get at most Ace Hardware stores little expensive but its rated #1 i do sell alot of it..Good Luck
If the walls have not been painted at all, I would coat first with a flat latex primer and then I would use an oil base eggshell or semi-gloss.

After about 7 years working in the paint business and four years in the Navy painting everything and then doing some paint contracting and remodelling work, I don't really like latex paints - they are too difficult to clean spots off of.

There is a problem with oil based paints, though. There is oil in them and that oil will cause a slight change in color over time. For instance, painting with white, you might notice a slight cream color after a few years.

When I had children, I painted all of the walls in my house with flat alkyd oil based enamel (hard to get now), but when the children walked down the halls with a crayon, I could clean it up in a minute, something you can't do well with latex.
