What are the differences between prefabricated grantie countertops and other grantie countertops?
Question:Which is better? I know the prefabricated are alot more expensive, are they poor quality? Do any of you have the pre-fab type? How do you like them?
Answers:
Prefabricated is less expensive than ones fabricated by local fabricators. The selection is limited both it the selection of the granite and the edge treatment, generally they are only bullnose. It is less expensive because cheap foreign labor and mass production techniques are used. None are better that another because they are all granite. Prefabricated edges seam to me to be just fine.
Prefabricated ones are prefabricated.
There are a few differences in prefabricated and "custom" fabricated granite countertops. "Prefabricated" granite will in all likelihood be cheaper, because of the mass labor, etc, and, yes, the finish will probably also be limited to bullnose or equivalent, as previously stated. The quality should be the same. Because you have an installer take your counter's measurements and custom install the counter once it has been fabricated, you get the same look once everything is done. There are also a few other detailed differences: First of all, you won't be able to choose your actual granite slab. This can be a challenge if you have a very specific idea of the look you want, and this ideal is not a uniform specimen like "absolute black" or "baltic brown." Many types of granite can very widely from slab to slab (Just remember, granite is all natural.. and that means variety, sigh, beautiful variety!). Second, your actual granite choices will most likely be quite limited to specific types they purchase in high bulk in order to keep the cost down. So, if you're looking for something different than the run-of-the-mill stuff, you probably won't be sufficed with prefab. Lastly, your prefabricated granite may take longer to create than a "custom" slab at a local shop, considering your order must be sent out, created, and imported from a different country.
One more word of advice: Go with 3 millimeter... none of that 2mm granite if this is for your kitchen or any other area with heavy use... I've seen broken corners so many times when 2mm is used. it is absolutely not worth the savings in the long run.. Hey, who wants a beautiful granite countertop with broken jagged corners??
