Skylight in kitchen. Not vented & is too hot in summer. What are my options?
Question:Can a plastic skylight be tinted? Where do I find one that would vent out the hot air (other than myself)? Too sunny in my kitchen & lets in too much light. Thanks for your answers.
Answers:
There are pull shades that can be installed horizontally across a skylight lens. There are similar to the typical window shade that you pull down and then it can "spring" back up.
There are also window tint kits that you can apply yourself. But be really careful that you apply the right tint for the glass you have. An incorrect application can can cause the glass to overheat and crack.
And by the by, I heard that you can get a tax credit for applying window tint to all the windows of your house. It is an energy saving thing.
I hope this helps. Good Luck.
if you have a plug in you can get a fan.
try not to use:
the oven
the microwave
oh and try not to keep unnecessary lights on
ck w/ the hardware stores... like Home Depot or Lowes etc... & c if the film will adhiere to the plastic. I'm not sure it will.. U could poss. frost it w/ a spray paint that is frosted or even tint it w/ spray paint made for glass.
that may help some.
Yes you can tint it. But why not have it removed?
I made a solar screen for my aunt's skylight that worked well. The screen blocks 85% of the sun's rays. Go to a hardware store or screen shop with the measurement as close to the skylight as possible. You can put it in with small nails for it to rest on. It weighs very little.
We had the same problem. My husband made a beautiful frame and put plexiglass in it. Then we bought some film that looks like stain glass and put it on the plexiglass. We then screwed the frame on the ceiling below the skylight. It turned out real beautiful. We get alot of compliments. People think its real stained glass. It was very easy. We bought everything at Home Depot. It keeps out the heat and it adds some light but not alot.
You can purchase cellular shades for your skylight that not only block the light (when closed) they also insulate to prevent it from getting too warm. They range from fairly inexpensive too quite insane for some custom fabrics. Most of the 'big box stores' like Home Depot and Lowes will will have them available, although they're probably special order items, in their millwork or home decor sections. Good luck!
