Is it bad to paint a small room a dark color?

Question:ok. my room is currently light purple (lavender) and i want my room to be dark purple. for years my mom has kept saying that if i paint my small room dark that it will make it seem even more small. but my room has 4 windows in it (thats a lot considering how small my room is). but i think that i will still paint it dark anyway. i want the two smaller walls (opposite each other) dark purple and then the longer two walls (opposite each other) stripes... medium stripe- light purple, small stripe- green, big stripe- dark purple, green, light purple, green, dark purple and so on. what do you think? good idea or bad? i think it will look great but i want someone elses opinion before i do it. (my room is mostly purple, green, and white stuff.)

Answers:
Yuck...dark purple...reconsider your colors.

lavender was better.
Go ahead

if your room has 4 windows then enough light will get through and make it visible, but at night, you're screwed use a lamp
I would say go for it - express yourself. Offer to purchase the paint yourself and do the work yourself and see if mom will compromise. If you don't like it then maybe she will buy the lighter color. If you like the dark but it seems 'too much' perhaps get some plastic white lattice like at a garden center, mount it on the wall over the daark purple and decorate the lattice with posters, ribbon and other momentos.
Go ahead and paint your room the color you want, it can always be painted another color, but you'll never know till you try.
Don't do it. Its going to make your room look really small...I have a friend who painted her room dark turquoise and it made it look soooo much smaller/ not good. Its like all you see is green all over. Its overwhelming. Try going with lighter colors.
I use to have my room dark purple. but consider this.. it does make your room feel smaller. instead of a dark dark dark purple... try a purple with a grayish tone.
If you like it then that's all that matters. Just for the record...dark colors do make a room seem smaller and require more lighting in general
My wife is a designer. 1st question 4 windows must mean you have two windows on two walls? otherwise you either live in a mobile home or box.
I would NOT paint your room so dark. But if you like the warmth of darker colors consider painting the ceiling. This will help you to creat a warmer environment and not have it look like a cartoon.
However i really like the idea of stripes. that sounds like it should be pretty interesting. I thgink you shoudl first do the stipes wall, then decide if you still need to go darker on the two opposing walls. If your walls are perfectly smooth, it will be a good idea to use caulk along the lines to get them to appear straight with out paint running into any of the texture.
Since you have 4 windows, go for it, but stay away from the green. I would do a dark purple of all 4 walls, but the 2 walls that you see when you look in the doorway, do 2inch stripes of metallic purple over the purple walls. Do molding and baseboards white, with a white gauze (flowing) curtain. Or get the clear door knobs and screw them in the walls over the windows, you can even use cabinet knobs and get curtains with loops and hang it from that, if the ceilings are low take the knobs up to the edge of the ceiling, it will give the illusion of longer windows. And accent with green.
paint 3 walls dark purple & 1 wall striped (prefferably the w/out windows striped) it'll give people who walk into your room some thing to look @ but not so much it's overwelming. And put most of your furniture on on the dark purple walls & put the wall accesories and maybe a dresser on the striped wall.
