Whats the best way to re-enamel a 1850's pedestle basin? can i do it myself?
Question:i have a 1950's pale green pedestle and basin, its in mint condition but its GREEN!! i want to re-enamel it in white. should i have it proffessionaly done or can i do it myself?

I'll presume here, that this fixture is porcelain coated. Yes, it can be done and, yes, you need a professional. A professional ceramist to be exact. It's a big job too...if you can even find someone willing to do it.
I personally would look for a white replacement. These things almost always came in green, pink and white and, as it's a 1950's piece, it should not be too difficult to find. Check architectural salvage operations.
BTW, a green sink is worth 4 or 5 white ones...
I had a friend who had their kitchen sink re-enameled and it turned out beautifully. It is costly but I would never attempt to do this myself.
Are you sure you can't live with the mint ? Martha Stewart was showing a lot of light greens and light blues in her magazine. They looked pretty good with the right accessories.
No, you cannot do it yourself, unless you have access to a very large kiln. The porcelin is applied as a powder, then fired in a very hot oven, much in the same way pottery is fired in a kiln. A local pottery/ceramics shop might be able to help, or recommend someone who could. I imagine it would cost a pretty penny to have it done.
