How long will paint keep? Will it still be usable after, say, 4 or 5 years.?

Question:I have been having a long overdue sort out of my DIY cupboard and found a few tins of paint, gloss and emulsion, that are either partially used or unused. I'd hate to spend one day painting walls and doors only to find it spread out on floor next morning.

Answers:
If they have been stored indoors and tightly sealed, they should be fine. Make sure to stir thoroughly before you use them.

If they were stored outdoors in a garage or shed, where they have been exposed to extreme heat or cold, throw them out.

stir them well and you will be ok
high quality paints too do not stay for a longer period. they just keep till maximum3 years. so u cant expect the paint to stay till 4-5 years
The cans should have an expiration date. But paint does last several years if properly stored. If it still looks good, use it!
It ought to be fine though you may find that it smell's a little.

I used some old emulsion (unopened) to paint my bedrooms walls and the smell took longer to go than usual. Though it did go eventually it seemed to take for ever.

I believe there is an additive you can buy that reduces the smell of paint.
stir it and keep the lid on it .
Paint should be ok for 5 years, however if you are in any doubt you could test it on a small section of wall or wood before doing the whole room and see if it sets properly.
stir the paint, make sure the lid is tight then turn the tins upside down then if any scum forms it will be on the bottom when the tin is turned and used.
Hazel you ask how long will your paint last , in a tin after 4.to 5 years , I HAVE found that when the lid is not put on properly , and it is not sealed down properly , what you are doing is letting in the air , into the tin of paint , so then over a period of months it will start to go lumpy , and as time goes on it will be dry the paint out and leave you with solied paint , and no matter how hard you try to get the lumps free it will not be worth useing , so you might as well dump it into the nearest tip . Now the other side of it is if the lid was put on properly , when you finished the last job , and it has been stored properly , then the paint in the tin will just need a good stirring , until it goes back into liquid form , as well as stiring try getting some of the skin of the top of the paint , hope this has been of some help to you .
G'Day Hazel,
there are a few thing's about paint and I have tried some of them myself with good results.
1. Clean the rim of the can before you re-seal it.
2. Store them in a cool place, better on a concrete floor than up high on a shelf.
3. If the can is in good condition e.g. no deformities on the rim/lid of the can, when storing it turn it upside down. This makes the paint inside the can seal itself and does not allow the seal to break.
4. When you think about it, every 2-3 months give the cans a quick shake to keep them mixed.
Hope these tips help!..
My uncle was a painter and decorator and being a Yorkshiremen was a bit on the tight side. Any paint left over from a job was put in the shed and some of it stayed there for years. His trick was to take off any skin that had formed and then sieve it through an old pair of tights into a clean container before he used it - that got out all the little lumps. It worked for him.
Well sealed paints tend to keep for a long period but the solids in them sediments and they are ++**! to stir back to fully fluid.
Emulsion sediments more readily and if kept in a place which freezes may never get back to a workable state. For some reason it ends up more liquid than originally and doesn't work properly.
Use or chuck emulsion it can cause you no end of heartache!
