I just had a new roof installed (30 yr dimensional shingles). What should I do about nailheads showing?
Question:There are a couple of places where the shingle above does not cover up the nailheads. This isn't widespread. What is the best way to repair this. The nailheads are flat and not sticking up. I don't want to have issues 10 years from now and would like to address it now. By the way, I haven't paid the roofer yet and intend to talk with him, but I just wanted some impartial opinions.
Answers:
If the roofer does not fix it, you can get black roofing tar in a tube (like caulk). A dab of that completely covering the head of the nail will prevent leaks. It is inexpensive and very effective. I WOULD NOT SUGGEST pulling up and replacing any shingles. You can end up causing more of a mess and problem than you currently have.
If not fixed, this could be a next month problem, not a 10 years from now problem.
Nails should NEVER be visible on a roof. the shingles should be covering the nails completely. I would want the shingles replaced, because there is a hole in the shingle now where the nail was. I would be worried about leaking...Normally, there is an area of the shingle where all the nails should be nailed. there is a thin line of glue, and nails should be nailed through that, not just anywhere that is easy for the roofer...
forjj is right! dont pay that roofer, NO nails should show if they did it right!
