Does anyone have any complaints with their granite countertops? how about quartz, is that better?

Question:

Answers:
Quartz countertops are actually denser than granite because of the way they are made (think big cake pans). That in itself makes them less likely to crack or fracture. They are actually a little more stain- and heat-resistant than granite as well. (Not stainPROOF or heatPROOF, but close.) ANY material will break with enough abuse, but yes - quartz is stronger. Also, someone mentioned the sealing. Granite does need to be resealed every 1.5-2 years, and quartz never needs to be sealed. The sealing process is really no biggie, but if you don't have to do it, why would you? I work for a natural stone fabrication company, and we get these questions all the time. I would try visiting some of the quartz sites and see what you can find out. Don't discount granite, though. There really is nothing like natural stone.
Oh--and it is not expensive. It's priced about the same as a Group/Grade 2 granite, typically.

Dear Ms. H,
Granite scratches but can easily be buffed out. Quartz chips and cracks much easier. If you have kids you will find that granite doesn't stain or scratch as badly as other surfaces. It handles heat and cold better also. There are some man made surfaces now that are stain and scratch resistant but they are quite pricey. Just as marble is. Best wishes.
If I did I would talk with my husband.
My husband is in the granite, quartz & Corian business.
33 years in kitchen cabinet & countertop business.

He says while granite is the hottest item, that quartz has the easiest care, will be more durable & will last longer.
Granite must be resealed about every 6 months or it will stain.
A dropped heavy item & a crack will appear in granite.
Granite holds germs because of pourous nature.
Quartz is easy to clean, germ free, & hard to break.

I have granite but I cook 1 to 2 times a week. Aren't restuarants great? They are 3 years old & we are talking quartz already.
