Is it okay to tile a bathroom using tiles randomly if the pattern is very faint?
Question:I've bought some nice ceramic tiles to re-do my bathroom. They are plain with very faint grey streaks/striated?
I laid about a dozen out on the floor at random and then matched them exactly ... I must admit the random ones looked better. Is there on rule on how to arrange tiles with just a touch of shading or streaking? Don't want to put them all up and then realise I've made a mistake!
Answers:
You've done the right thing by laying out the tiles first, if you thing random looks better then I'd say go with that, they will look better once hung and grouted. I think faint non obvious patterns look better random. I made this mistake in the past with wall paper. Patter looked like it could be matched but looked awful up, I rehung it randomly and it was spot on. Wish I'd laid it out on the floor first!
Surely as it is your bathroom you would have your own taste! So what if other people would or wouldn't do something - if you like it - go for it!
There are no hard and fast rules. If it was something structural I would say things are done certain ways for a reason but decorating is all down to personal taste, I'm sure there are things in our house that some people would change if they lived here.
With decorating and fittings etc bottom line is it is your bathroom if you like it do it
do what you want it is your house
do what looks good to you!
As with any decorating it's all down to personal preference, you say the tiles look better at random, i'd say go for it.
