Artex ceilings?
Question:We have recently bought our first house together, (note the ppl who we bought it off were artex mad) while painting the ceiling in the main bedroom bits off artex started to come off. We have peeled abit more off just to see whats happening, I really don't think it is anything to worry about but the ceiling is artexed, then there is paint under that then it is solid under the paint. We are wondering whether if we completely scraped the lot of and get the ceiling skimmed would that be ok? Also I've heard that some artex contains asbestos how old does the artex need to be. The house is 107 yrs old but the artex doesn't look older than a couple of years. Anyone got any advice?
Answers:
The official Artex site says that none after the 1970's had asbestos. This is a quote:
"There are numerous comments & unclear unjustified statements regarding this so I will try to clarify this question as best I can. Artex did in some cases contain asbestos up untill the late 1970's.
However even though asbestos was used in the manufacture of artex compounds the asbestos fibre used is of a very low risk & would only pose a small health risk if disturbed ie: scraping or stripping of material from ceilings or walls. if attempting removal yourself ensure you have adequate ventilation & always wear a face mask to prevent breathing in the dust."
if in doubt DON'T TOUCH IT get an expert to Analise it for you
if safe, you can either scrape it off and sand flat[very messy]
or if its well stuck on, skim over the top
there are products on the market now specifically for this j0b
but be warned its very hard work!
the product manufacturers know this and price their goods accordingly
high labour or high cost
if asbestos if found - let the pros handle it
