Answers:
If you are including Engineering, you are talking about Interior Design.

Good field. Most people don't understand just how much Interior Design influences their lives.

An Interior Designer needs to have a LOT of knowledge to be successful. You need to know a lot about construction, drafting, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, etc. and have a solid background in decorating to tie it all together.

The percentage of what to study should be fairly balanced, unless you want to specialize in a certain field like Green Design or re-modeling. You should also pursue an internship with a designer if you can.

All I will tell you is that even when an economy is "slumping", buildings still go up, thus the interiors will always require people who can create blueprints and build awesome things! homeowners and businesses have a tendency to want to put their best "look" forward.. thus i would say go ahead and become that engineer with that special twist ---and be the best you can be, the best in the world if possible (i.e. make a reputation for yourself). it sounds like you'll command a great salary.
