How can I make a room brighter?
Question:My living room is entirely wood. wood floors, wood ceiling, even wood paneling on the walls. the only windows are the two doors leading to the back porch on either side of a dark brick fireplace. My dad thinks it would be horrible to paint the walls or the ceiling and he's hated every white couch or chair my mom and i have considered buying. How can my mom and i brighten up a room when my father is so completely satisfied with the room we have?

my grandmom recently had her wood paneling painted and it looks so good .. maybe you could show him some before and after pictures online so he can see that it truely looks alot better .. she painted it a cream/yellowish color and it totally brightened up the room

Your dad might hate this but the best thing to do would be to decorate in very light colors. This will definitely brighten up the place and even make it look larger.
From personal experience...I just moved into a nice apartment that had one problem...the bathroom did not have much light and was decorated a dark ugly peach/pink color. I had to make the best of the situation so I bought white rugs, towels and other accent pieces. It really does make a difference and now my eyes are drawn to the pretty brightness rather than the ugly peach.
white is not the answer to brighten up a room. try yellow or green or other cheery colors, let your dad be part of the shopping. throw pillows, rugs, paintings, and curtains help too
I'd love to have a living room with wood panelling and a brick fireplace, dark or not.
add a few colorful pillows to the things you already have and get some floor an/or table lamps
