How do you put a dimmer in room?
Question:I'm not sure how to put a dimmer in my bed room. It's kind of romantic, yes? also I can leave it on all the time,
Answers:
They sell one that looks just like a switch with a little side adjustment at Lowes for $15. Have a electrician or a contractor change it out. And yes it is romantic at night :) I put dimmers all around my house and even put a remote control dimmer in bedroom above bed.
This is a very easy "switch" job.
Turn off the power to the light circuit at the breaker box (or remove the fuse, if you have fuses instead). Very important part, make sure it is off or you will have fried fingers.
Remove the two screws from the switch cover, then the two screws from the switch. Pull the switch out of the box. It should have two covered wires attached to screws on the switch. Color does not matter, nor does it matter which is attached to which screw. There may also be a third wire that is either bare or green. The color does matter for this one.
Straighten the ends of the wires with a pair of pliers. The exposed ends should be about 3/8", if more trim them with a pair of cutters.
Your new dimmer should have two black wires and a green screw. Attach the bare or green wire to the green screw and tighten. If there is no bare or green, simply skip this step.
Attach one of the other wires you removed from the old switch to one of the black wires on the dimmer using a wire nut supplied with the dimmer. Hold the wires so the bare ends are in the same direction and parallel to each other and twist the wire nut on firmly. Attach the other wire to the other bare wire in the same way. Wrap the wire nuts individually with electrical tape.
Tuck everything back in the box and put the two screws in the dimmer. Put the cover on, turn on the breaker (or fuse) and you should be all set.
Getting the wire nuts on can take a bit of practice and the dimmer is larger than the switch, so you may have to work a bit to get it back into the box. Other than that, this is a simple project that you can do with a minimal amount of mechanical ability.
Most important part is to make sure the breaker is off before you start.
go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a dimmer switch. I think it has the instructions in the container.
