What would you consider to be a small house? What size is uncomfortably small?

Question:Would you rather have a small house - under 1200sq/ft with unique, custom materials or a big house with builders grade materials?

Answers:
The size of a house depends on where it is located.
In some areas a 1200 sq.ft. house is considered small, while in other areas, in Japan for example, 1200 sq. ft. is considered large.
In some of the third world countries families live a less than 200 sq.ft.
So it is always relative.

it is to small if its littler than 1500 sq feet
a small house is were you can't put but 4 or 6 items in the house.
Big house
Small with custom materials but that is due to the size of my household. In a larger household I'd take the extra room with the builder's grade and then upgrade once the kids are a little older.
While you should look to buy what you like you should also take into consideration selling. Most of us do fairly frequently. In this regard, the larger house is a better investment because so many people just don't appreciate quality and so will not pay for it in a smaller house.

If you are quite sure to live there for 20 years, suit yourself and don't worry about resale.
I live in a house that is 962 sq.ft. It's small for 2 adults, don't know what we'll do if a baby comes along, so..I'd say a house that's larger than 1200 sq ft, like between 1500-1700 sq. ft with builder grade materials than all the custom work in the world to actually live in. If it were a vacation home that you only visit once or twice a year, go for the small custom home, though.
Well, I think it depends on the person. There are factors like age and lifestyle to consider.
For example, a 20 year old might be more comfortable in a smaller house than someone raising a family of six, with their parents living with them.
Also, if intimate dinner parties and reading quietly are my lifestyle than I might need less space than someone whose idea of fun is woodworking and working on a boat and several cars.
Another consideration is location of the home itself. If I were living in NYC, a smaller home would be more affordable than a larger property.
Circumstances were that I had to have a house -- any house -- in this neighborhood, under a certain price. I still had 2 teenagers at home. The house I could get happened to be 900 square feet. And it was about 100 years old, or at least parts of it were. So I bought it and we kicked out 4 walls. Our girls are grown and gone now, and it's perfect for us. Over the years we have customized it ourselves, to suit us. When you walk through the front door, you get an optical illusion that it goes back forever, although you're actually looking out the back door. One woman walked in the front and asked me if I lived in both halves. She thought it was a duplex.
