I think it all depends on where your hallway leads to and from. Does it run, say from a kitchen with tile, into a foyer with tile? Then, I would continue the same tile to keep a continuous look which would make the space seem larger. Try not to break up your space from room to room. It will appear choppy. Larger tiles make the space seem larger even if it is in a small hallway. If your walls are cream, blend a neutral tile in the cream to sand family (which I would recommend anyway) to keep the space light since it is a hallway. You can use a textured tile which would decrease slipping somewhat. Try to avoid a deep texture which accumulates dirt. Watch out for pin holes in the tile. Paint is your least expensive fix, so don't worry about it. Blend it to your wall color. Stay with warm tones. Your investment is going into the flooring which ever way you go. You can always put a runner on the tile. It all depends on the style of what you have in your home. I've used marble, granite, mexican tile, ceramic tile and french terracotta tiles and limestone. Some need more maintenance than others, like sealing and polishing. Ceramic needing the least. But, the grout needs to be sealed in all cases, as well as some of the natural stone. You will need to ask your tile retailer or installer.
Wood is timeless and adds value to your home. It is warmer and as others said, you do not have to worry about chipping and sliding but it all depends on the traffic flow. If you stay in a light to medium shade, like a light oak, you won't see dust as much. There are many wood floors to choose from. But again, what else is going on in your home? If your hallway is off of a front entranceway where you will be coming in from the winter with snow and mud, it will tend to scratch. But, if it is not, and it leads to your bedrooms, it will be fine.
Look around your home and think about what is connecting to it and try to keep the same flow. Choose the type of wood according to your style. Take some pictures to the flooring store.
It is hard when you hate to decorate. Try to enjoy it though. You will be making an investment for years to enjoy. You obviously care about your choice.
Hope this helps.
I wouldn't, i have just moved from a place with them, if you accidently drop any of your shopping on them glas jars smash instantly! They are also cold!
My house I own has got pretend ceramic tiles, it is actually wood! Carpetright sell it, its warm, easy to clean, and doesn't break anything you drop on it!
