Decorating advice please.?

Question:I have a spare open room upstairs.
As soon as you reach the top of the stairs its right there in your face.
At the moment I have a L-shaped sofa ,a TV unit and thats it.
I want to get rid of the TV unit .Actually I'd love to make it a little retreat with out a TV.
Any suggestions what to do with the room?
What theme should I go for?
Color scheme etc...

HGTV's "Design On A Dime" did this library makeover with burgundy leather chairs, dark red curtains & dark wood bookshelves, while keeping the walls white & bright.

Here's a study make over that they did on HGTV's "Sensible Chic." The walls are painted with green/gray vertical stripes, with a blue lounge chair for reading, a small writing desk, and a large map of the world on the wall. It includes all of the steps, too:

Here is a cozy looking room with a sofa like the one that you describe above:

I hope these pics gave you some ideas. And definitely poke around the site for more. It's full of them.

Does it have a window?

If so go with a white/cream/blue beachie kind thing...the colors make small places look larger.

Bookselves, comfortable seating, adequate lighting. Go for the reading room/study type setting on a small scale.

If the space is more of an open kinda deal go with some warmer coolers like deep reds, browns, oranges...
I am SO good at this. If I was decorating that room, I would go with a blue, brown color scheme, I see those colors all over the place now, I just recently saw a very large throw rug at HOme Depot, It was blue and brown SHAG carpet, I love shag carpet! And for your furniture maybe just a contemporary blue, white or brown couch/chair. And if you wanted to make like a little side table, if you wnated to contrast, you could buy a piece of white fabric and just lay it over a table like piece wooden furniture. And for extra things to put in the room, maybe just a few white flower plants!!! I hope it works out good for you!!
You could make a theme room to reflex your personality or your interest other then making it a standard sitting room, office/den/workout room/etc.
Well I would start with the floor. If it's a fairly large room put down some carpet, if it's average size a big circle rug in front of the L shape couch and a coffee table. a couple of end tables and some lamps would be nice something to match the carpet with colors. as for the Windows and walls, some long drapes, not to think, but kinda see through. some hanging pictures mmmmm maybe two or tree at the most not to many a center piece for the coffee table, something like a fake plant or maybe something like a fake bowl of fruit but everything should match the theme of the room, if it's fruit you should have pictures of fruit and the drapes should have she same or similar colors of the pictures or bowls of fruit on the coffee table. Now for the entertainment center you can use it as a what not shelf for little items photos, ceramic, candles, so on and so forth. If the room gets enough light use soft colors if it's rather dark, use medium colors.
Decorate the whole wall with Ford memorbillia and paint the walls Ford Blue...your hubby will love it..hehehehe
