In answer to your question-yes it will be safe but your talking a baby here so may I suggest an even better way to finish your crib so you wont have any worries...That is to use shellac-even if the baby were to teeth on a spindle shellac is not harm full. One of the biggest consumers of shellac is the food industry-that is the coating on Chiclets chewing gum,for instance.
You will want to use clear shellac sand or steel wool between coats and apply a few coats
I wouldn't dream of using oil based polyurethane on a baby crib. They make latex polyurethane now and it works really well.
i would imagine but i would put a finish coat (clear coat)on it so it doesnt chip ya know
You really need to call the company that makes the product you are considering using. My grandmother (35 yrs ago) painted a bassinet yellow with oil based paint and it made my baby sick and she puked alot, then I stuck my head down in there and puuueee it stunk. It was a real bummer. Have you considered simply hand rubbing?
Listen, I mean read very carefully. When the poly has dried, there is nothing that would make the child sick. VOC are dispersed as the product dries. There are just as many harmful things in a waterbased product and there are in a solvent based product, which when taken orally in a liquid state, are not good for anybody. Again, when films have dried, you will be safe. Just make sure you feed your kids often! Good Luck.
