What is the purpose of the popcorn-y like material on ceilings? Does it even have a purpose?

Question:

Answers:
This was a popular ceiling choice between 1976 to 1993. Primarily used because it was cheaper than finishing the ceiling. It is also used to hide any imperfections in the ceiling . Basically if a smooth finish was preferred it needs to be pretty close to perfect in order for there not to be any shadows on the ceiling. Technically it serves no other purpose. It is however quite easy to remove but really messy.

It is "Acoustic Tile", it is designed to absorb noise.
Its just easier to put on than trying to paint the ceiling and get it smooth. that's the only reason they do it. I have it all through my house but plan on scraping it off and re-painting (one of these days...)
It's functions are two:

1. Baffle noise

2. Make your home look dated and harder to sell.

We have the stuff on our ceilings in our house (built in the early '80s). Can't wait to get rid of it.
it's jst the old way of doing the ceiling w/o having to worry about making it smooth etc... more & more newer places r jst going w/ same texture as the walls. Some think it's distiquishes from the walls.. I think it's CRAP!!
lol
I hate that stuff!! I am sure you have tried cleaning it?
Many track built housing, apartments have this, no clue why?? They must think it looks good?
I do not think it has any real purpose..
I believe it was very popular in the 70's - it is very easily removed with a plastic putty knife - be ready for a mess
It's for noise. You're lucky its only on the ceilings on your house lol! My house was built twenty years ago so we were the first owners and still live in it of course... anyways what's annoying is that every wall and ceiling in the house has that texture and its annoying as hell to paint walls! Also idon't like the look of it. You could probably get rid of it unless you need a little noise blocked
for decoration. it was popular in the 70s i believe. be careful if you are removing it. it may obtain asbestos that is harmful for your health. get a pro to look at it if you are thinking about having it removed.
It hides many an imperfection. It's rare to see a really nice, smooth ceiling anymore, and if the house (or whatever) has the popcorn ceiling in the plans, the imperfections multiply. It's really quite inexpensive, and a pretty quick application, so labor costs (and craftsmanship) are low. On occasion you'll see paint mixed into the stuff before it's sprayed, and that cuts down on some of the dust etc.

Finally... God help you if you smoke in the house.
