How do you rearrange furniture to give it a different feel?

Question:I'm not sure what this is called exactly, but in the movie "The Break Up" with Jennifer Aniston when they're eating dinner with the whole family, someone mentions that they like the way that Brooke has the room set up, that it give some sort of "balance" to the atmosphere. What is this? And how do I do that?

Answers:
The "balance" in a room often means that no one side or section of the room feels heavier. If you have more of the furniture to one side, or if you have a piece that really stands out you'll draw more attention to that portion of the room making it feel out of balance.

A great way to work with this is to figure out what the room is for and then work around the most important piece to that function.

Try planning the room online before you get down to the physical moving. But remember the online sites don't take into account the colors and styles of the furniture.

Good luck and have fun with it.

There IS supposed to be a trick (well more than one) to this. My wife watches a show on HGTV where they rearrange rooms for nothing and they DO look better. Then she tries to get me to do it! Check that out...I forget the name, but the website would probably have a listing.
well, if you are talking about eastern philosophy stuff it is feng shui.
But, anytime you rearrange a room you are going to "improve" it unless you do something that simply does not work. I love rearranging furniture in my house. I just rearranged my living room this week. I have a large room and everything was shoved up against the walls. It worked before because I used to have lots of meetings and stuff so I needed the floor space, but now, I don't.
So I focused on the fireplace, moved the TV over near it, and then made a seating area in the middle of the room around those two things, since our living room is our tv room. this allowed me to put a desk behind the couch to serve as a console with lighting, and also a place for my kiddos to study. It also left a nice corner for a reading nook and another for some large plants.
Totally changed the "atmosphere" in the room from large and separated to nice and cozy. no feng shui needed.
But if you are in to that stuff, the library has tons of books on feng shui for you to check out.
If you know any gay men, invite them over, and they will take it from there.
