What is the best way to totally block out sunlight from my bedroom windows so i can sleep during the day?

Instead of going to the expense of sun-blocking curtains or blinds, you might consider an eye mask.

There are some made out of a very comfortable black foam with an elastic band that holds it in place. The foam has cut outs in it to allow you to open your eyes inside the mask and 'see' blackness. Mine is made by Hearos and it cost about $10 at Walgreens. It came with earplugs.

There are masks that are basically small pillows made out of a silky, satiny material enclosing rice or barley that has been scented (aroma therapy) with lavender and chamomile. These are very relaxing and soothing. These are available at Stein Mart and also cost about $10.

The other advantage to using a face mask is its portability. Unlike blinds and curtains, a face mask is easy to carry with you on a trip.

cover your windows with tinfoil, i know sounds stupid, but works, just be sure to face the shiny side out... hubby worked nights and did this to sleep days, works great
buy window treatments with a blackout feature, like the ones in the link below.
you can but special curtains/blinds that are made of a special material that blocks out the light but they can be really expensive!!

you could also try getting a friend/family member/ neighbour to make curtains out of a cheaper material but put in a special lining that helps cut down the light that passes through!

or you could go for the really cheap option of putting cardboard up against the window!!
Buy black curtains which have lining on the other side. Are you a vampire?
sleep in the basement.
You can go to a fabric store and get "blackout fabric," which is ugly but keeps out the light, and then sew something prettier to it and use it as curtains. It works really well as long as you make the curtains long enough and add some sort of clips or ties to keep them closed at the middle
Light darkening shades are great if you can order then.
