Could you put wall coverings on the floor and floor coverings on the wall. Which ones might work?

I think floor coverings on the wall will work...have u heard about the Kashmiri Carpets...those'll look fabulous on the plain wall & the wall color should be in contrast with the carpet.

Floor coverings work better on the wall than the other way around. Most wall coverings can't take the abuse of being on the floor (except for NO-TRAFFIC areas).
