Can I convert a garage into a room? I know that I will need to keep the garage door on for the exterior but?
Question:Can I convert a garage into a room? I know that I will need to keep the garage door on for the exterior but can I do what I want inside the garage? I will need to some how get to get air conditioning into the room because i live in Florida and it gets real HOT. Someone suggested that I get a little unit that goes outside of the garage and with a little tube it enters the room with the cold air. I also got the central air conditioning duct work inside the garage that perhaps a air conditioning guy can do something with to run some addtional duct work into the garage?
Answers:
Yeah you can do it yourself it['s really not that much.
yeah you can. I saw it on My Wife and kids
you have to insulate the garage for the A/c to be effective. A wall will need to be built in front of garage door.
I would put in a window unit. they are fairly cheap and work really well cooling one room.
good luck
There are zoning and building codes involved here. You are asking for trouble if you don't get the proper permits.
Put up a sheet-rock behind the garage door and sandwich high-grade insulation between the door and the wall, that will prevent all the heat from coming in also this will prevent lizards and insects from coming into the room. Run more than one central air duct into the room. Split the flow of air from bathrooms and hallways into the room. It is very important to insulate the gap between the roof and the ceiling to maintain the temperature you can also add a cealing fan to the room. A tiled floor always feels cooler to the touch, and I would recomend that over a carpet. Good luck !
I wanted to do that where I live and was told that I must comply with city housing code if it was to become a part of my living quarters. You might want to check city codes before you start. Duct work to the room would be more efficient than a separate one room unite. Good Luck
