Does anyone have any experience with refinishing a bathtub yourself?
Question:I know it can look bad and all, but I want to know if it is impossible and if anyone has actually had some experience with this.
My tub is old and it is ruined. The finish is completely gone on most of the floor. It is a small bathroom, and this tub was placed in before the walls were finished out, so it would have to be broken in to pieces to remove. That's not do-able right now.
Also, I know you can have them professionally re finished, but that is not do-able right now.
I want to hear from people that have done this. How did it turn out? Any advice?
I mean, my tub is ruined right now anyway, so it cannot get worse.
Oh, there is no window in the bathroom to vent, only an overhead exhaust fan.
(by "ruined" I mean it is useable, it just looks terrible and the bottom surface is rough due to finish coming off)
Answers:
they sell kits.look at hardware stores or on line. it is epoxy in a variaty of finishes and very durable as well as easy to do.
Well I never tryed refinishing but being a plumber I've seen it all. Sorry to say, but unless you replace the tub there"s nothing that will last. You didn't say if you own the house that the tub is in, other wise let the landlord know about your problem. Even the professional jobs don't last. Re coating doesn't work because the tub moves when heated and cooled so the finish will crack in time. A bath liner just allows bad stuff to grow under the liner. If you own the house then you can try painting the tub with a paint made for metal but it will, in time, peel. Save your money and have the tub replaced by a plumber. That would be your best bet.
They have a good kits at home depot that works awesome! I love it! good luck!
