Answers:
The kitchen is my favorite home to design so I hope I can be of service to you.

You dont have to know anything about the different types of wood necessarily, just what you want your kitchen to look like. There are five different types of wood species to use when considering kitchen cabinets: Cherry, Maple, Oak, Laminate, and Hickory.

Of those five, I think the most universal wood is maple. It looks good in any style home. And it is affordable. I dont know how you are building your home, but if you have the opportunity to select your own cabinet builder. I would jump at the chance because any other way, you are going to get charged way more than you need to be. This includes Home Depot and Lowe's. Look in the phone book and find a local cabinet builder. I live in a small area and I think there are about 3 or 4 cabinet builders in addition to Home Depot (who we have only had for a year) and Lowes.

I do recommend that you take a visit to Home Depot and look at the cabinets that they offer. If I didnt hire a custom cabinet builder, Home Depot would be my second choice. They sell some of the best cabinets in the business. Thomasville is their most expensive line, followed by KraftMaid, American Woodmark, Premier and Mill's Pride. If you near an area with a EXPO Design Center (A division of home depot) has more to choose from.

Its OK if you don't know them all. I recommend going to your local Home Depot or Orchard to get brochures on Remodeling your kitchen, look at the pictures basically and see what you like best, (it will say right on it)
Think about your overall home decoration and the type (or color ) of woods you already have, once you like something, try getting some samples to take home and look at them under your lighting!!

Good luck!
With kitchen cabinets you can use just about any wood. It's all in the way you want it to look. The big three are Oak, Maple, or Cherry with each one being more expensive than the previous. Oak gives you more grain - Cherry is a darker wood giving you a more high end look. You can also stain the wood any color you want, but when you get a higher end wood like cherry you want the actual wood to show, not cover it up with stain. I would do a quick google search on kitchen cabinets and see what you find. It's all personal preference. You could hang pine up if you wanted too and paint them. Hope this helps.
You have a fun project ahead of you. There are so many choices that you have to go see them. Take your time, you will be spending alot of money and this is somewhat permanent during your dwelling as well as the countertops, sink and faucets. Don't rely on magazines or TV, look at all places that sell cabinets, there are more than just HD and Lowes.
