Satin or semigloss paint? Which should I use?
Question:I will be painting my grandmother's living room soon. She has old fake wood paneling that is textured, with "grain" and grooves between. I have already primed and will be painting with latex paint. However, due to the texture, should I use satin or semi-gloss finish? There are no imperfections and wall panel is in good shape. Is it better to use semigloss for the light reflection or will that make the texture stand out too much. I am not looking to hide the texture, but don't want wall to be too dull.
Any suggestions?
Answers:
You really should use flat latex, because satin and semi-gloss will show all the embossed parts and the grooves of the old paneling and won't look good at all. A flat surface reflects all light hitting it but satin and semi-gloss will absorb light and won't reflect till a ''ton of light'' hits it and then the light reflected won"t be unform in the room.
satin is your best bet.
I agree with the flat. That's what I used in my living room over paneling. Actually I put spackling on the walls first to help camoflage the grooves. It doesn't remove the grooves but it does help to make them not so noticable.
