Im trying to wire a ceiling fan?
Question:My house has dimers on the switches and I want to install a fan. The fan comes with instuction for the wiring, but it only mentions white, blue, copper, and green wires. My ceiling has a red wire and the instructions dont mention a red. Is the red the wire for the dimer? If so then how do i connect it to the light on the fan?
Answers:
Before attempting to hang a ceiling fan make sure that the overhead fixture is 'fan-rated'. In other words you need to know whether or not it will support the mass of a fan.
When you know for sure it will handle a fan then begin installation. First turn off the power to the overhead fixture. Since there is a red wire coming out, are there any other wires there? You probably have a white wire, a green or bare copper wire and a black wire. If this is a relatively new house or had a competent electrician it may already be wired for a ceiling fan.
Since you say that a dimmer may control the fixture you will have to remove this as you must NEVER operate ceiling fans with dimmers, you can only operate lights this way.
Not to be conceited but as I don't know your skill level I'm reluctant to offer anymore advice, you may e-mail me if you like with more details. I'm willing to help but I don't want you to get hurt.
Ok this is simple. was the house or that room wired for a ceiling fan? don't forget, you should have 2 switches. One for the light and the other for the fan. If your room wasn't, you'll have to join both the wires on the ceiling fan to the hot on the ceiling. This means the light and fan come on when you turn on the switch and if you didn't want the fan on, you'll have to pull the chain to shut it off.
