How do you paint a room with a border...without getting paint on the border?
Question:Is there a tape you can buy that won't damage the border when you peel it off? I don't want to replace the border in the room, only re-paint the walls. Any advice is appreciated.
Answers:
You don`t say how thick the border is but if it`s thick enough to hold a piece of vinyl tile or wide drywall knife against, lean the handle/tile out towards you and paint the wall underneath or behind it.
You will have to keep sliding the tile/knife along with you `til you start getting ANY buildup, slide the tile/knife up/down the wall, and keep the excess paint wiped off or the excess will follow along with you, painting your border.
Using painter`s tape on a thick border takes a practiced hand to get it flat with no puckers and holes. Very tedious.
If It is a flat paper border, simply place the blue painter`s tape along the edge of the border..
Best to practice on your unfinished wall with either method first.
Genvieve`s answer sounds good too. Almost Too good? (:>
Again, try it on your unfinished wall first.
Good Luck with it!

Blue paint tape from walmart or some hardware store works great
put masking tape on the boarder, and carefully peel it off afterward
there is a couple of ways
1 call a pro
2 tape it off
3 learn how to cut in the border with a brush
u want to cut the walls in first before u paint, basically trace the outlines of the walls and ceilings and the things u dont want to paintmake sure the corners of the walls an ceilings and borders are all painted first then get a roller and fill in the blanks
Use the blue painter's tape. You can get it at any Home Supply store such as Home Depot or Lowes. I think even Wal-mart carries it. It's sticky but not STUCK FOR LIFE sticky. You can stick it over the border's edge and paint right up to it. It also comes in various sizes, so if you are using a regular paintbrush and not those special "wedge" brushes, you will still be safe.Good luck.
You can try taping it off, but even blue painters tape can tear the pattern from the paper. A secret that I learned many children's rooms ago is to go over the border with glaze first. Just plain clear glaze. That seals the paper, but you will still be able to peel it off. After that dries, then you can mask it off normally and nothing will happen to the paper. The other benefit is that you can wash it if there's a later splatter mishap, whether spaghetti sauce or a childish temper tantrum gone awry.
