Those look very much like the poncho liners we were issued in the USMC. The size of these liners was about the size of a blanket for a single bed. The shell was a slik like material with a fiber fill center. THe fabric was then diamond stiched if I remember correctly. These were highly prized, and were often turned into jackets, pants, and hooded coats. I also saw a nujmber of queen sized quits made or these - in addtion to feather ticks.
The material is extremely light weight, dries fast, and does not shrink, unless you are trying to make it shrink. Most of the jackets & coats That I saw were embroidered with the units men were in and with Phrases like "When I die I'm going to heaven - because I've already spent my time in hell - USMC Hotel 2/5 Viet Nam 67 - 69.
I bought several of these at Army/Navy Surplus stores over the years for camping blankets; - usually for about $ 3.50 to $ 5.00 each. USMC called 'em "poncho liners".. Hopes this helps. I got a feeling if you go to a Sporting Goods Store Like Cabela's or Dicks, or Scheel's your going to spend $ 20 to $ 40.00.
Of course, I would assume that you could order the fabric once you know what it is, and have a comforter made for you. I needed 2 custom feather tick quilts made for Chirstmas for my twin 8 year old Grand daughters. Their mom had said no because of what they cost, (She had gone to the Amana Colonies in Iowa to see about having the two made in the design the girls wanted, and they were priced at over $900.00 a piece., (and if you are looking for reasonable prices for excelent work - I don't know where else to go for Cottage style craftsman goods.but the Amana) Colonies)
Of course I was next of the list, since I tend to shamelessly spoil all 13 grand kids, and I said I'd call Santa and see what we can do. Now I know both of these little Angles havem't believed in Santa for about 3 years going - but in the case of something they REALLY want , I've noticed that even teen agers are williing to at least put on a show of belief in the old elf again if it meams scoring an X-Box 360 or a WI III, or the like. I always have to go into the bed room and look in the dressing mirror to see if I really look like that much of a dim bulb, - and I don't think I do - but I may be prejudiced.
So I turned to my secret weapon - Ida May Johnson, My 7th grade Home room teacher. A Strict old bird when she was a teacher , I was amazed to find a kind, sweet, warm and funny woman when she and I met again some 10 years ago at the Luther manor Nursing Hiome; where My mom was the social director.
Whenever I was in town I liked to swing by "The Manor" and take Mom to lunch, and see some of the "Guys". Many of which were avid hunters and fishermen, and who also loverd to play Pitch, Ucher, and cribbage. Since I was usuallu off for 10 days or so when I was in town ans still single, I'd often spend a day or two with" the fellas", Those who could be out all day with no problem I would pick op at 5:00am, and I'd outfit 'em with hunting or fishin gear, we'd get licenses on the way out of town along with breakfast, beer, ice, shore lunch supplies, - etc; and spend the day fishing in the boat or road hunting.
Good times - great company - magnificent lies.
One one of our fishing outings I got a call the night before from one of the guys, who informed ne that Herb Thompson was taken into the Hospital that evening with a stroke, but they had a volunteer replacement to take his place - if that was OK.; I said fine by me - as long as he did 'nt mind swearing, cigars, beer, and fun, and could keep his mouth shut about everthing we did on out trips. (I had to promise no alcohol, no smoking, no rich or spicy food like Slim Jims, Donuts, Fried Pork Rinds, Chili Dogs, Schnapps, etc.. So I wrote all those forbidden things down - discussed it with the boys - and that made up our basic grocery list on our outings)
Also under no circumstances were any of them to drive, which meant - as far as I was concerened with in site of the "Home". Anyway. The next morning We loaded up , I didn't get a chance to say hello to the new guy, because it turned out that Harold wasn't really supposed to go that day - he was scheduled for an upper & lower GI that afternoon, - so we had to hurry before the nurses station was on alert. I waited until exactly 5:00 am - we were all loaded by then, then raced to the nurses station while the night nurses went off on rounds, and only one attendant was left at the desk, (donald the pudding lover) quicly singed everone out - including I. Johnson, threw Donald a Pack of Marlboros (his Favorite - and siad I was never there), and boggied out of there.
We left town in a driving rain and didin;t stop till we hit the truck stop Waffle house 20 miles west on I-90. It was still raining as we went in, and we got the big corner booth - it was there I discovered that I. Johnson was Ida not Ira Johnson, and I said "Huh, My 7th grade homeroom teacher was named Ida Mae Johnson, what a coincidence. She said it's no coincidence dummy , it's me young man -you still don't pay attention do you? I did a double take and said "My God ! It is you still as mean as ever! She replied. somewhat hurt, "I was never mean to anyone, I was strict, there's a difference you know;l I wanted you young people to turn out to be good citizens, men and women of character people who cared and made a difference in life, and it seems I sucecced - did'nt I ?"
We spend an interesting reunion of s day - the segway back into quilting is was that Ida Mae was in a Quilting club at the Manor and they turned out about 2 dozen quits a year. Some for charity - and some the sold at the Fair for "Pin Money". Anyway, she would talk to the group, and she was sure that the group would pick up the challenge of doing the two quits I needed for my grand daughters - on one condition, and that was the grand daughters had to spend 4 hours at the Manor on four sunday afternoons helping with their quit making, and learing to quilt. I asked what the cost would be, and she said she would let me know. So a deal was struck - provided I got the girls and their parents to agree, - which they did.
The quilted feather ticks turned out to be beautiful, exactly what the girls wanted, and along the way they learned how to quilt. They both kep comming to the Manor on Sunday afternnons to quilt with the "Luther Manor Needles" and still quilt today. Ida Mae Johnson died in 1982, and was buried back in Alabama, her home State. Before She died she made me a quilted camoflage hunting jacket, pants, and hat. I've spread out over time and can not wear them anymore, but they are stored away - and I come across them every Christmas and remember a kind woman and fishing buddy.
So you to might want to check with area nursing homes to see if they have quilting groups - that cold help you out. By the way, The Ladies charged me $ 200,00 for my Grand daughters quilts - (after all the girls helped too they said). I bought the group a new surger from "Santa" for Christmas that year..
