"removing carpet"?
Question:I just bought a house and need to redo the floors. The last owners obviously had a pet that didn't get to go out often enough. I had a store give me an estimate and they said they won't do carpet removal because of the pet stains. I can remove it myself but now I'm curious because of their refusal if there are hazards or something. Place was build in 2002 so carpet isn't that old just dirty, stained, and stinky.
Answers:
Ack. My last day as a carpet guy was was just such a job.
Cut the carpet out in strips and roll it up. The only hazards are tacks and the like. Old animal urine is as nasty as you would expect, but not exactly toxic. Wash up well, and you should have no trouble.
Sounds like they were being lazy! I don't believe there would be any hazards.
Do you have hard wood floors beneath the carpet? I do in my house and am planning on pulling the carpet this summer (it also has some old pet stains on it), sanding the floors and redoing them. My hardest part is going to be getting rid of the carpet...land fill is going to be $$$$$!
Good luck!
After you get the carpet up, floor sanded, don't forget to seal the floor so the smell is gone. Some backing on carpets is dusty like stuff and you may want to wear a mask. Can get them at walmart or any hardware store in paint dept.
there are no hazards from urine soaked carpet it is just a very unpleasant job that most installers want to avoid.try offering to pay extra to the installers in the form of a tip if you want to avoid doing it yourself.easy rip up instructions follow.
purchase a carpet knife and razors.cut carpet into managable strips..3 or 4 foot sections, roll up and tape(duct tape will work fine)if there is padding underneath remove in the same way.
make sure you wash the floor undeneath really well and if it still smells throw down a layer of baking soda to sit for a few days(shop around for the really large boxes of baking soda)
