How much should I charge?
Question:I've been learning how to reupholster for the past few months hoping that I can start charging and make a bit of spare cash- My friend wants me to reupholster her chair- I've told her that I'm still learning but am good enough where I could give it a go. Any idea how much I should charge? I was thinking $50-100 but don't want to over or under charge...

My Mother does this for a living, depends on what size chair. A fabric rocker chair..about $250 pluse the cost of fabric,a small couch $350,a large couch $450,Check out local shops around you and ask them also. For a firend and just starting out, tell them to pay for the cost of the materials you will need and add $50,that way you'll get an idea for the next time. It takes my Mom about 1-2 days to do 1 chair. Unless it's just a wooden chair with cushions..thats just a couple hours.
Do it for 30% of what a professional would charge - excluding materials. If she wants to find the materials so much the better. Have her take the pro's estimate, (say $100) subtract the material cost (Say $20) and charge 30%of the $80. I know the numbers are low, but I hope you get the drift here.
You're still learning and you will find that there are many factors to take into account. Since she is your friend, and this is relatively new to you, consider charging her the lesser amount. You will spend more time on your newly acquired art, but you will learn from this challenge. You certainly don't want to lose a chance to hone your skills, nor lose a friend over the charge. Remember, practice makes perfect. Have fun, take care of your friend and consider it a chance to evolve.
I need my huge couch reupholstered...do you live in Miami by chance? You can have at this one, lol.
