Can you stain leather furniture to make it darker?
Question:My wife and I bought two light leather couches from some friends and would like them to be a darker color. It was too good of a deal to pass up. However, we would like to know if you can you stain leather furniture yourself to make them a darker color?
Answers:
Painting and staining are 2 very different processes.
Dyes (stains) can only be used on aniline style leathers that absorb moisture because the dye has to penetrate the leather.
If your leather is a pigmented/protected leather then it will need to be re pigmented (painted) to get it darker. In the UK we have excellent pigments to do this work (although it is not something you can do yourself) and you could change to whatever colour you want. These pigments at present are not available in the US.
Do not be tempted by any DIY products on the internet the preparation processes in this work are crucial and should be done by a qualified technican.

Not really. Anything you put on the leather is just going to rub off on your clothes..
At this point you may just want to place a dark sheet on the cushions, to look different. You know, like wrap the sheet around them.
Try to get use to the light color. A deal llike you got, I would find a way!!
I did this with a chair I bought second hand - since I did hair for so many years that was my first thought - I mixed hair dye and sampled in areas until I came up with the correct color - wiped it on like I would a wood stain worked out wonderfully - then just put leather conditioner on it...VERY cool! it looks natural!
