Wood windows - repair or replace?
Question:Previous owners let dog run rampant and apparently he liked the kitchen windows, there are marks where he gnawed and scratched the wood on the bottom half of the window, window jamb and sashes mainly -- would it be better to repair the windows or replace with new windows.
Answers:
It is easier to repair than replace and cheaper to repair than replace. However if they are the old single pane windows you may want to consider new windows since heating costs have gone up so much.Just make sure the new windows will match your architecture.Nothing worse than an old house with non-matching windows.
If they're old style single pane glass windows, now might be the time to upgrade to dual pane, energy efficient models.
If they are already dual pane, you can do wonders repairing the wood with filler, then sanding and painting. Could work into lots of sanding and painting, there's a lot of angled millwork on windows.
Good Luck!
replace. wood windows fogg up and let the cold in. Low efficiency and needs repainting.
as much charm as the old windows add, new windows are always a good idea. they are easier to clean more energy efficient and made of safer glass.
depends on how energy efficient they are...if they are single check around for replacing them...i would go full frame not insert ...inserts you loose about 2-3 inches of window all around...Marvin windows are good window and they have wood interior and aluminum clad outside plus they do look the best from the outside
replace
Replace with more energy efficient windows - you'll be better off in the long run.
