Ceiling fan!!!!?

Question:how in the HECK do you install a ceiling fan? is it something i could figure out... or something i should have a professional come do?! i already have the light fixture up i just dont know if all lights can have one put in or what the deal is!

Answers:
Ceiling fans are heavy and when they spin they create enertia. Therefore the box that they need to be connected to have to anchored to the joists above. If you do not have access to the joist bay from above, they make a "remodel" box for fans. It is a metal junction box that attches to a threaded rod system that anchors into the ceiling joists. So first disconnect the power to the existing light before you do anything. Remove the existing light fixture. If there is more than one set of wires in the box, label them with tape and make note of which was connected to which. Now remove the existing junction box. Most junction boxes are mounted to either a truss/joist or a bar. If it is attached to a bar you will see two screws at the top of the box, remove them. If it is connected to a truss/joist you will not see those, gently push up on the box to determine which side of the box the nails are on and either cut the nails with a sawzall or safer get a narrow pry bar and gently pry the box off of the truss/joist. Next install the aforementioned remodel bar. Insert it into the existing hole and tighten until the teeth on either end bite into both joists and then crank it until you can't turn it anymore. Then install the remodel junction box to the bar you just installed. Don' forget to fish the wires into the new box before you attach it. Reattach wires as per your notes. Now you are ready to install the ceiling fan as per manufacturers installation instructions. Also ceiling fans come with remote controls now, so you don't have the pull chain thing going on. The remodel fan box is available at home depot, it is made by westinghouse and it is in a blue rectangular box and cost about $16.00. Cheaper than a trip to the e.r. if the fan spins right of your ceiling.

well yeah, you could figure it out.. but if you're unsure i'd get a pro to do it.

WHATEVER you do.. go to the fuse box and turn off the power to that room first!

basically it's pull it out (turn and pull) undo wiring. connect wiring to fan (match colors) connect two screws to ceiling (normally) and then finish up. if you don't have instructions i would just hire someone...

but it can be hard if they used the wrong type of enclosure.

also it helps to have two people so one can hold the base while the other connects the wiring
There are two issues:
- Mechanical. The things are heavy, and require a special strong bracket to be installed in the ceiling. These are available at hardware stores, but if you don't have convenient access from above, you may have to put a hole in the ceiling to install it.
- Electrical. If there is a single service line to the ceiling box from the power switch, the fan will want to have separate pull-cord switches for fan speed and lights (if it has such). If you are running new wiring, you can run a 3-wire cable so that fan and light can be controlled from separate wall switches. There may still be pull-cord switches for fan speed and light level, but for new work one can get a fan that is fully controllable from the wall. Check the package for specific wiring requirements in this case.
if u can't figure it out- better not playing with it ..
leave it to the pro to do ... better than hurt urself
